After completing medical school, Dr. Siegel was an internal medicine intern at Albany Medical Center Hospital and then went on to perform a dermatology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center – Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where he rose to become chief resident in his final year before his Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Surgery at Baylor. After his Fellowship, he returned to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center – Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where he founded and ran that institution’s first Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery unit.

He founded the Division of Dermatologic Surgery at SUNY Stony Brook in 1990. He ran this division for 12 years and established a Fellowship Training Program from which many of the area’s practitioners have graduated while actively teaching medical students and dermatology residents. During this time, he attended the W. Averell Harriman School for Management and Policy, SUNY Stony Brook where he earned a Master of Science degree in Management and Policy in December 1995 and a New York State Advanced Certificate in Labor/Management Studies in May 1996. Currently, he is Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the State University of New York at Downstate School of Medicine where he teaches residents, medical students and fellows; directs the American College of Graduate Medical Education approved Procedural Dermatology Fellowship and the American College of Mohs Surgery training program and spends part of his week at both the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Hospital and SUNY Downstate.

He was the American Academy of Dermatology’s representative for the AMA Practice Expense Advisory Committee, a sub-Committee of the congressionally mandated AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee (RUC) from its inception in 1998 until 2003. At that point he became the sitting dermatology Representative to the AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee (RUC). He currently is member of the Board of Directors of both the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery. He has received many honors including the AAD Presidential Citation for exceptional contributions to the Academy and the field of dermatology. He is an honorary member of the Latvian Association of Dermatology, where he participated in the first meeting of Baltic dermatologists after the fall of the Soviet Union and has run training workshops for Latvian dermatologists.

Professional society memberships on the national level include the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the American Society for Mohs Surgery and the prestigious Noah Worcester Dermatologic Society and American Dermatological Association, among others. On a local level he is a member of the Long Island Dermatologic Society, the Suffolk County Dermatology Society, the Suffolk County Medical Society and the Medical Society of the State of New York. He is an author of two books and over two dozen referenced publications and is co-editor of The Physician’s Internet Review for Dermatologists. In addition, he is on various editorial boards in the field of dermatology and is a contributing editor to the Dermatologic Surgery journal.
