Friday Pop Quiz #34

ocular cicatricial pemphigoid

The answer is C. Cyclophosphamide + corticosteroids.

Cicatricial pemphigoid is a heterogeneous group of subepithelial blistering diseases involving the mucous membranes and skin. The treatment of cictracial pemphigoid is predicated upon the extent, severity, and location of disease. Most regimens used are empiric and are based on clinical experience. With severe ocular involvement, most experts recommend aggressive treatment with the combination of prednisone and a immunosuppressant, such as cyclophosphamide, azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil. While all the other agents can be used as treatment for cicatricial pemphigoid, severe presentations should be combined with an oral steroid.
