Patient Buzz Series | Estrogen Creams for the Face?

A recent myth-busting column in The Washington Post addressed if estrogen creams can prevent skin aging when applied to the face. The column noted that research is lacking on the facial use of estrogen creams. However, research does show that estrogen creams can improve skin when applied topically in menopausal women, and some dermatologists do prescribe estrogen creams off-label for facial use.

Dermatologist Dr. Anthony Rossi pointed out that estrogen creams are not FDA regulated and may contain forms of estrogen other than estriol at varying concentrations. The column concluded with a list of anti-aging ingredients that research shows are effective. In addition, the column noted that, when prescribed off label, the estrogen concentration in these creams is unlikely to pose a health risk.
