Patient Buzz Series: Beef Tallow Skin Care

A trend that’s been growing in popularity in the consumer press is beef tallow skin care. In an article by Fox News, the founder of a tallow-based skincare company touted the high amount of nutrients in the product. She also said customers have claimed beef tallow helps with acne and psoriasis.

However, in a BuzzFeed article, dermatologist Dr. Anil Sharma said beef tallow may do more harm than good for the skin. Dr. Sharma pointed out that beef tallow is highly comedogenic and that, according to some studies, beef tallow applied topically may make people more sensitive to sunlight. In an Allure article, dermatologist Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd pointed out that the product’s meaty smell may be its biggest downside.
