The FDA’s alert on the safety of topical finasteride is one of the dermatology news stories making headlines in the consumer press. New Beauty interviewed three dermatologists for their perspective on the popular hair loss treatment. Dermatologist Dr. Skylar Souyoul notes that topical finasteride does not have the same level of clinical study as oral finasteride. Dr. Natanel Jourabchi says it’s important to remember that side effects are possible with the topical formulation. Finally, Dr. Jason Chouake points out that, with proper care and oversight, topical finasteride is generally a safe treatment option.
Health asks about the efficacy of supplements that claim to have sun protective properties. These supplements are becoming more available online and in drug stores. While most contain polypodium leucotomos, dermatologist Dr. Asmi Berry says some also have nicotinamide, astaxanthin, and lycopene. While polypodium leucotomos is the ingredient most studied for its UV protective properties, dermatologists quoted in the article note that most human studies of the ingredient have been small and more research is needed.
Allure questions whether or not “medical-grade skin care” is legit. The article considers the perspective of federal regulators, cosmetic chemists, and dermatologists. Dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara recommends checking brand websites and scientific studies, or even reaching out to the company to determine the amount and type of research conducted about a skincare product. As far as who should consider “medical-grade skin care,” Dr. Gohara says those experiencing skin conditions, such as acne and rosacea, may find the products most beneficial.
