This month’s Patient Buzz Listing includes articles on different oils and juices for thinning hair. Marie Claire highlighted moringa oil, which has been used since ancient times and has made a comeback thanks to TikTok. Dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu says moringa oil has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties, which can help promote scalp and hair health. Women’s Health/MSN promoted rosemary oil, which blocks DHT, a form of testosterone that affects the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss. Onion shampoo containing onion juice is another hot option on #HairTok. Dermatologist Dr. Dara Spearman says some of her patients have shown improvements in scalp health while using onion oil products. In addition, onion oil’s antioxidant properties may also protect hair follicles by reducing oxidative stress.
After the European Union banned an ingredient in gel nail polishes, TIME questioned the safety of gel manicures. The ingredient in question – trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide or TPO – was banned in September, yet Kelly Dobos, a cosmetic chemist from the University of Cincinnati says consumers should not be overly concerned. While the research focused on rodents’ ingestion of TPO or the injection of TPO under rodents’ skin, Dobos says the systemic exposure of TPO through gel manicures is very low. Dermatologists quoted in the article focus their concerns with gel manicures on the dangers of UV exposure and the application and removal processes.
Everyday Health published the results of a study on nicotinamide in preventing skin cancer recurrence. The retrospective cohort study found patients who took 440 mg of oral nicotinamide twice a day for 30 days had a 14% decrease in overall recurrence of skin cancer. The biggest risk drop (54%) was with those who took nicotinamide after their first skin cancer. Dermatologist Lee Wheless, who authored the study, says the results show nicotinamide is a beneficial secondary prevention strategy.
