Patient Buzz Series: Sharpie Lip-Liner Trend

Using a Sharpie as a lip liner is the latest TikTok trend raising concerns among dermatologists. Some social media influencers say using a permanent marker is a cheaper alternative to traditional lip liner. However, an article by Fox News quotes the Northern New England Poison Center’s website, which says the ink in permanent markers may contain xylene, toluene, and urethane resin. Dermatologist Dr. Brooke Jeffy warns of the potential for toxic absorption and says any money savings aren’t worth the risk.

Health highlights a recent Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology study that determined the most effective skincare ingredients, according to dermatologists. Researchers surveyed nearly 80 dermatologists about 83 ingredients and determined 23 of those ingredients are regarded by dermatologists as very effective. Ingredients that made the “most effective” list include azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, mineral sunscreen, niacinamide, retinoids, salicylic acid, and vitamin C. Dermatologist Dr. Adam Friedman, who was not involved in the research, says this study shows that there are evidence-based ingredients that dermatologists agree upon. Senior study author and dermatologist Dr. Murad Alam says he hopes the findings will be helpful to both dermatologists and their patients.

Women’s Health/AOL shares the skin benefits of grapeseed oil. Dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner touts grapeseed oil’s non-comedogenic properties, and dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal says in vitro studies show grapeseed oil can enhance collagen production. The article also states that grapeseed oil can help with acne flares, protect the skin from environmental damage, and improve skin barrier function in skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.
