A review in Cosmopolitan addressed questions about the safety of radiofrequency (RF) microneedling. Last fall, the FDA issued a safety communication about potential risks with “certain uses” of the devices. The FDA received reports that some RF microneedling patients were burned, scarred, or disfigured, or experienced fat loss or nerve damage. In the article, beauty director Lauren Balsamo shares her experiences undergoing RF microneedling with the Morpheus8 device as performed by dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry. Balsamo is a fan of the treatment, though she points out Morpheus8 procedures are costly and can be painful. Dr. Henry notes that the treatment may delay signs of skin aging with results that typically last a year. Balsamo writes that the consensus among dermatologists and plastic surgeons is that RF microneedling is safe if performed by a physician in a clinical setting.
NewBeauty outlined what patients should know about pre- and post-procedure skin care. In the article, dermatologist Dr. Debra Luftman recommends that before a procedure patients consider using gentle exfoliants, antioxidants, hydrating products that support the skin barrier, and mineral sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. In the days after a procedure, Dr. Luftman recommends using products that are anti-inflammatory and protective. Retinoids are not recommended in the weeks leading up to and immediately following a cosmetic procedure.
Oprah Daily and Real Simple shared what consumers should know about PDRN, also known as salmon sperm skin care. Dermatologist Dr. Kavita Mariwalla explains that PDRN was originally investigated for wound healing with activation of the adenosine A2A receptor as the supposed mechanism of action, which contributes to reduced inflammation and improved tissue repair. While PDRN is gathering buzz on social media and in product launches, Dr. Mariwalla says research on its effectiveness in aesthetics is incomplete.
